A Brief History

Robin Soldan

Flautissimo was founded in 1984 by Robin Soldan (pictured right) to encourage proficient flautists in and around Southampton to gain experience in ensemble playing. The "flute orchestra" was the first of its kind to be run in Hampshire; the inaugural concert was on the 28th of March that year.

The orignal 7 students from Regent's Park School and 6 from St Anne's School were soon joined by many others. The "James Galway" effect was at its height!

The group has enjoyed much success, including performing at school promenade concerts in Cardiff and Manchester. Appearances at major London venues have included a "Music for Youth" concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, a Schools' Music Association concert at the Royal Festival Hall, and as participants in "The Magic Flute Day" at the Barbican.

Membership

Currently the ensemble is under the direction of playing members Harriet Rudge and Kate Roberts. The group utilises piccolos, concert flutes (the flute most people are familiar with), alto and bass flutes, and a recently purchased contra bass flute. Flautissimo members are usually at least Grade 6 standard, and include adults and young people alike. The group provides a unique opportunity in the area both for adults to join a smaller, dedicated Orchestra and for school/college age players who may have "graduated" from a school ensemble or one of the City's flute choirs.

Many of the works that Flautissimo play are arranged from well-known pieces. Others have been composed specially for the flute orchestra. There is a long tradition of variety; for instance, Christmas isn't all carols!
