Flautissimo is the Southampton Flute Orchestra. We rehearse weekly during term time, and perform at a number of different locations throughout the year. We often perform with other groups, or for specific events.
Joanna Price has been Music Director of Flautissimo since 2013, having previously played with the group for several years. She always looks forward to leading the ensemble towards new successes, bringing exciting and varied flute orchestra repertoire to audiences.
Jo relishes the opportunity to explore both contemporary works and well-loved favourites, and is passionate about creating engaging, high-quality performances. Most recently, she performed as soloist in a flute concerto with Romsey Chamber Orchestra — a rewarding experience that continues to shape her musical journey.
Jo was Principal Flute of both the Reading Youth Orchestra and the Berkshire Youth Orchestra before going on to study Music at the University of Manchester. She later completed a PGCE in Secondary Music teaching, alongside a Licentiate in Instrumental Teaching.
We play a wide repertoire encompassing Renaissance to Contemporary Classical, popular arrangements and pieces written specifically for flute choirs.
The group plays all flutes from the piccolo to the contrabass. Players can opt to play different parts and different instruments. The group has a number of altos, basses and a new contra-bass which are loaned to those who want to play them in the group.
Since 1983, Flautissimo has been the hub for flute players in Southampton and surrounding areas. We welcome players of all ages, all standards and all levels of experience to enjoy making music together. We are a friendly and inclusive group with rehearsals split between two sessions: Piccolissimo for players up to grade 4 standard and Flautissimo for players of grade 5 standard or above. We play a variety of music from baroque to contemporary, and arrangements to our own commissions.
Flautissimo is a registered charity and is run by its trustees who are all playing members. We encourage members to join the trustees whether they have just joined or played with us for a long time. The aim of the trustees is to ensure the smooth running of the group, organise rehearsals, arrange concerts and ensure that everyone enjoys playing great music in a friendly atmosphere.
